When we first drove by Cooter's Garage while passing through the small town of Sperryville, VA, we pulled over, took a picture of the General Lee parked in front of the "Hazzard County General Store" and moved on. We thought it was a one time Dukes of Hazzard gig so we didn't pay much attention to it. But when we drove by it again a couple months later we just had to investigate.
We never would have guessed what was in store for us. We walked into the place to find Cooter, the mechanic from the Dukes of Hazzard played by Ben Jones, standing behind the counter, signing Dukes memorabilia, and chatting with the patrons of the store.
After perusing the museum of old Dukes items, which had everything from board games to lunch boxes, we purchased a mug and an authentic Cooter's Garage Air Conditioner (above and to the right). At that point Cooter had wandered outside the store where a country music band was now playing, so we left to catch him.
We chatted a bit about what he's been up to (apparently he appeared somewhat recently on Sliders), had him sign our fan to Zooass (What's a Zooass?), then asked about the General Lee we were standing next to. Indeed it was one of the original 229 cars that was actually used on the show back in the good old days. He was nice enough to sit on the hood while I (Sir) sat behind the wheel and got a picture taken. If only I had my bow and some dynamite arrows!
